Course outline

Phase 1: MPhil

Postgraduate students wishing to register for our PhD programme must first register for the MPhil and seek conversion at a later stage. IBS operates a system of preliminary registration for all research degrees so as to allow students to prepare a formal proposal during their first two semesters of study. All research students must also subject their work to an annual progress review.

All students enrolled for the MPhil in Business and Management programme will be supported by supervisors who will help them develop a programme of research and writing. IBS welcomes research proposals that match or are similar to IBS staff’s current research topics and/or fall within the potential supervisors’ areas of expertise.

Phase 2: PhD

The PhD in Business and Management is an advanced research degree, which those MPhil students may join who made satisfactory progress at the MPhil level by (a) successfully passing a comprehensive review and (b) submitting a feasible research proposal. Companies and institutions need professionals with the skills to manage and market knowledge-intensive products, as well as professionals with a deep understanding of the scientific principles underlying products and processes. IBS’s internationally acknowledged PhD programme in Business and Management focuses on developing employable expertise through in-depth research. The emphasis is on independent research and one-on-one consultations.

PhD students undertake supervised but independent research, at the end of which they submit a thesis of not more than 100,000 words embodying the results of that research. This thesis must demonstrate familiarity with, and an understanding of the subject, its principal sources and authorities. It should display critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the judgements of others. A PhD thesis must embody an original contribution to the knowledge of business and management either by the discovery of new knowledge, or by the exercise of a new and independent critical approach.
